An ultrasound exam is used to identify the cause of the varicose veins. Varicose veins are usually caused by a a failed "valve " in the upper leg. This root cause is treated with the laser. This is why stripping has failed so much in the past, this valve typically was not treated. The EVLT procedure so far has shown to be about 99% effective.
The procedure takes about an hour and is performed with local anesthetic and intravenous medications for relaxation. The patient resumes normal activity in a day or two typically using only Aleve for pain control.
